Dewatering

Dewatering is the removal of water from solid material or soil by wet classification, centrifugation, filtration, or similar solid-liquid separation processes. Dewatering is the common term used to describe the removal or draining groundwater or surface water from a construction site by pumping or evaporation. On a construction site, this dewatering may be implemented before subsurface excavation for foundations, shoring, or cellar space to lower the water table. This involves the use of submersible "dewatering" pumps, centrifugal pumps, eductors, or application of vacuum to well points.

Construction of buildings, powerhouses, dams and many other structures requires excavation below the water table into water-bearing soils. Sykes Pumps Oman delivers dewatering solutions on such excavations requiring the lowering of the water table below the slopes and bottom of the excavation to prevent ravelling or sloughing of the slope and to ensure dry, firm working conditions for construction operations. Dewatering Methods

Lowering the water table can also be utilised to increase the effective weight of the soil and consolidate the soil layers. Reducing lateral loads on sheeting and bracing is another way of use. A number of dewatering methods are available for controlling the inflow of water into an excavation; the choice of method will depend on the nature and permeability of the ground, the extent of the area to be dewatered, the depth of the water table below ground level and the amount by which it has to be lowered, the proposed methods of excavation and ground support, the proximity of existing structures, the proximity of water courses etc. Sykes Pumps Oman offers free, no obligation, site surveys and quotations for all aspects of dewatering and ground water control.

Ground Water Control

Without efficient ground water control, even the best run sites using the latest technology can run into considerable difficulties. A water-logged site not only causes delays, which can incur expensive penalties, it can also be hazardous for those working on the site. Groundwater pressure can collapse workings without warning. Efficient groundwater control is an absolute necessity where the depth of the proposed excavations is likely to reach below the standing water table for the excavation area. Wellpoint Dewatering

Wellpoint dewatering systems enable you to lower the groundwater table adequately for deep and large construction sites. It has proven to be a very flexible system. The water from high permeable soils is pumped from Wellpoints, installed along the trench of the site. The Wellpoints are jetted and spaced to obtain an efficient drawdown against lowest capacity. The Wellpoints with integral strainers are joined to transparent flexible hoses, which are connected by quick release couplers to the ring main header pipeline. Wellpoint dewatering is done either by gravity or vacuum. The Wellpoint dewatering system utilises self-priming, vacuum assisted centrifugal pumps. Wellpoint dewatering is one of the most economical, flexible and stable methods of dewatering available. We provide a complete service: from site investigation and calculations, using our knowledge of previous subsoil conditions, to recommending and installing appropriate dewatering equipment. Typically, we install a number of Wellpoints, with tubes 40mm to 60mm in diameter, protected by a filter screen, so collecting underground water efficiently. All our Wellpoint dewatering pumps are fitted as standard with high capacity vacuum pumps, enabling the maximum drawdown and greatest number of Wellpoints to be installed. Pumps deployed include the Univac WP150/60 high efficiency, fully automatic general purpose unit, either diesel or electric.

When you need to excavate below 7-9 metres in water-bearing aquifer, we can install a multi-stage system of Wellpoint dewatering.

Wellpoint Dewatering - Progressive Line Installation

Designed for pipelines and other similar applications, a progressive or roll along dewatering approach is installed alongside the route, preceding excavation and pipe laying. Equipment from a previously completed and backfilled section is installed at the head of the line, removing the need for large quantities of equipment. Although the principle is straightforward, considerable Wellpoint Dewatering expertise is necessary to implement reliable and efficient ground water control systems. The equipment and method of operating has been developed by Sykes Pumps Oman specialists as a result of their experience over 35 years in the region.

Dewatering - Deep Bored Pumping Well

When the water table needs lowering below 9 metres, conventional vertical Wellpoint Dewatering in stages isn’t feasible or economical. We provide an alternative the tube or bored well. A hole is bored to the required depth a mesh screen lining then allows water to accumulate at the bottom, which is removed by a pump installed in the well. Dewatering pumps typically used for deep well gravity drainage include Pumpex electric submersible units: these pumps permit excavation down to 22m in a single stage.

Deep Well Dewatering

Deep Well dewatering systems enable you to lower the groundwater table to a considerable depth. A submersible dewatering pump is installed at the bottom of the well, of which the casing generally has a minimum diameter of 150 mm. The discharge pipes from the submersible pumps of a number of adjacent wells are connected to a common delivery main. The water is raised from the well by a multi-staged pump which generates a high head corresponding to the depth of the well. Deep Well groundwater control systems are employed to lower groundwater levels to provide stable working conditions in excavations. A Deep Well system consists of an array of widely spaced bored wells fitted with multi-stage electric submersible pumps. Deep Well systems are effective in a range of soil conditions from gravel to fine sands. This dewatering technique is particularly suited to deeper excavations or where artesian groundwater pressures threaten base stability. Deep Wells can also be used where small amounts of drawdown are required over large areas, such as for trenches.

Deep Wells typically consist of vertical or inclined bores, usually in the order of 200mm to 300mm diameter placed through the strata requiring dewatering or pressure relief. A suitable uPVC well casing will be placed in the borehole, consisting of screened and cased sections. An adequate filter pack is installed to both maximise well yield and inhibit the movement of fines. After well development, airlifting within the well casing is carried out before a suitable electric submersible borehole pump is installed.

Open Dewatering

Open dewatering systems enable you to lower groundwater table adequately in cohesive and low permeable soils. Water is pumped off directly from sumps (ditches) along the toes of the slopes of the excavation works. The suction hose with strainer is merely placed in the sump and the collected water is primed and discharged. This makes the open dewatering system easy to install and simple to operate. The open dewatering system utilises self priming or vacuum assisted centrifugal pumps. The Sykes GP and WP range of pumps are ideally suited for this open dewatering application.

Dewatering - Centrifugal Pumps

The Sykes Pumps range of robust and highly reliable centrifugal pumps are designed for handling high volumes of water. Our centrifugal pumps convert the input power to kinetic energy in the liquid by accelerating the liquid by an impeller. Water enters the pump through the eye of the impeller which rotates at high speed. The water is accelerated radially outward from the pump chasing. A vacuum is created at the impellers eye that continuously draws more water into the centrifugal pump. Centrifugal pumps are used for large discharge through smaller heads. The centrifugal pumps available from Sykes Pumps are fully automatic and dry priming.
